Spread the love

According to the survey conducted by Amerisleep, the most common recurring dream in America are dreams related to falling. Results show that 54 percent of the respondents have experienced falling in dreams. And in most cases, the dreamer wakes up after.

Definitely not a nice way to wake up, right? But before we dive into the interesting dream interpretations of falling, let us first tackle two topics that are related to falling dreams. These are: (1) falling dreams myth and (2) hypnic jerks.

A Common Misreading Of Falling Dreams

I am not sure if you have heard of this falling dream meaning before. They say that if in your dream you fell and hit rock ground, this is a premonition that you will soon die.

Others have already debunked this myth. And for me personally, I have not come across a case where one fell and hit the ground in his or her dream, then die in his or her waking life.

Falling dreams can be interpreted as a lot of things, but death is not one of them.

Having cleared that, let us now move to the second topic which is the jerking movement we commonly make during sleep that wakes us up after.

Hypnic Jerks And Their Causes

Have you ever experienced, as you are just falling asleep, your body suddenly made a jerking movement that caused you to wake up? (I bet you did!)

The involuntary jerking action or sensation that pulled you back to reality is called a hypnic jerk. Human minds identify the contractions of body muscles as falling. Thus, this experience is often associated with having a dream about falling.

This “sleep falling” takes place in the initial stage of sleep. The very moment when you just drift off to dreamland. At this sleep stage, you usually get spasms of muscles in the arms and legs. There are even times when muscle contractions happen to your entire body.

Hypnic jerks are considered normal and are not something that we need to be alarmed with. To date, there are still no clear explanations of why sometimes we get these body spasms as fall asleep. It is like your body and mind are not in sync on whether to stay awake or go to sleep.

Though there is still yet no concrete theory explaining it, here are possible triggers of these jerks:

1. Stimulants

Too much intake of caffeine and nicotine affects your brain function. These stimulants keep your brain active, preventing you to get a deep sleep.

2. Stress And Anxieties

Stress and anxieties keep your brain working even when your body is resting. Your stress may be as simple as not being at ease in your own bed. Probably your bed is new or your sheets are not comfortable. These instances make your body alert even during sleeping. Thus, you are having a hard time sleeping well.

3. Exercise

If you did your workout too close to your bedtime, chances are your body is still active even when you are sleeping. Due to the nearness of your exercise schedule to your sleeping, your body did not have enough time to cool down.

What Does It Mean When You Fall In A Dream?

When we look at it, during our waking life, we fall because we lose balance and control. There are times that we fall only by ourselves, yet there are also instances that we go down because of outside forces.

Most often, falling dreams represent your anxieties, fears, and insecurities in your waking life. But, falling dreams may mean losing balance and control as well.

Like at times you feel overwhelmed with something and start to lose control of the situation. Then soon after, other things in your life start to be affected also, causing you to lose your balance.

For example, your relationship problem has grown out of proportion, and you start to lose control of the situation. Because of this your responsibilities in school, work, and family are beginning to be affected. Your life balance is now being affected.

These dreams are messages from your subconscious. You may need to slow down and calm down for you to overcome your fears, and, regain balance and control.

How Did You Fall?

The context associated with your dreams about falling would vary from one dream to another. The manner in which you fell in the dream will help you identify which among the dream interpretations is yours.

And the details you see during your dream state will make you understand the message of your dream. And see which are in your life should you focus on in the meantime. Read on to see if your dream is described in the list of falling dreams below.

1. You Lost Your Balance

If in your dream, you fell because you lost your balance, the falling represents your loss of control of a situation in your waking life. The loss of control is being reflected through your fall — you had no control over the direction and even on the possible impacts of the fall.

Your dream wants you to know that currently, you lack balance, that you are standing unsteady place.  And that you need to locate a stable ground to stand to.

You seem to be overwhelmed by certain situations in your life. Try to regain your control by examining the areas you lost control of that led to your slip. The setting of your dream may indicate where exactly in your life needs fixing.

Do not be discouraged. Face the situation with your head up high. By confronting it, you will soon lessen or even totally eliminate these dreams about falling.

2. Someone Pushed You

Another variation of dreams of falling is when someone pushed you to fall. You need to identify who or what has pushed you.

If you recognize the person who has pushed you, your dream means that you feel that the person is being manipulative or bossy to you. The attitude of the person towards you is causing you stress. You need to assess your relationship with the person and see what you can do to reduce the stress you are having.

If you have been pushed by something, try to think about the symbolism of the thing in your life. Let us say, you were pushed by a computer, it may mean that your work is bringing you stress and anxiety.

There are also instances when you are the one who pushed yourself. Your dream about falling means that you are being so hard on yourself. You are forcing yourself to work beyond your limits. Your dream is telling you to cut yourself some slack and learn to take a break if needed.

3. You Were Holding Onto Something

Did you dream that you were trying to hold onto something to keep you from falling? Your dream indicates that you are fixing a situation that you do not have control over. You are exerting too much effort (by holding) on something but there are still high chances of you losing grip and eventually falling.

Is this bad? Only you can tell. But your dream reveals the important things to you. Things that you are willing to hold onto it, despite you are in a losing (or in this case, falling) situation.

You may need to slow down in life. Try to be calm so that you may hold on more tightly. On the other hand, this dream also suggests you might need to find more stable ground to avoid situations like this, where you need to hold on for your dear life.

4. You Fell While You Were Flying

If you suddenly fall while flying in your dream, this means that you are giving up on something. You fell while you are flying because you are no longer exerting effort to stay in the air.

Unlike the popular notion, giving up or quitting is not always a negative thing to do. However, before you decide to let go and stop flying, evaluate carefully the outcomes of it. Is the view from the ground more beautiful than that from the top? Weigh the pros and cons of giving up. If it will help you free yourself from stress and find more serenity, then, by all means, let go and move on.

Your dreams may be suggesting that take this change.

5. You Fell Into The Water

Another kind of falling dream is when you plunged into the water. This dream means you are experiencing emotional distress. Water in dreams is a symbol of emotion.

Falling in water represents feelings of helplessness and out of control. If you are having this kind of dream should seek help and locate your source of anxiety and fear.

6. You Saw Somebody Fall

If in your dream, you saw somebody else fall, it means that you feel that that person is losing control over his or her life. Moreover, that person is causing stress and anxiety to the people around him or her.

That someone needs your help and support. Try to give a helping hand or if they refuse your help, just be beside them. They may not only be losing the balance externally but internally as well.

Nonetheless, there are cases that which someone in your dreams is you. You are watching yourself take the fall, but you are stuck from where you are viewing and cannot do anything.
